Golf Painting: Creation Stories and the Future Directions

Hudson Shaoxia Zhang incorporates the natural landscape of a golf course, which is a result of modern transformation, into the system of traditional landscape paintings. In fact, he is responding to the proposition of "natural truth" put forward by the Barbizon School in the 19th century. The Forest of Fontainebleau painted by Corot and Hudson Shaoxia Zhang's golf course form a mirror image – the former is the "ideal nature" from the perspective of agricultural civilization, while the latter is the "man-made landscape" reconstructed in the era of capital. This transformation of subject matter itself is an experiment on the contemporary nature of landscape paintings.
