Shaoxia ZHANG
Memoirs of Hudson Zhang Shaoxia's Academic Works - 2

Zhang Shaoxia recalled the experiences of writing "A History of World Arts and Crafts", "A Brief History of European Arts and Crafts", "A History of Asian Arts and Crafts" and "A History of African and American Arts and Crafts", and regarded them as very meaningful things during his ten-year career at Nanjing University of the Arts. Because of the theoretical system created by the older generation of scholars such as Yu Jianhua, the art history and theory of Nanjing University of the Arts at that time had a profound foundation and an unshakable position. In those days, only the course of the History of Chinese Arts and Crafts was offered in the art history and theory major of Nanjing University of the Arts, while the course of foreign arts and crafts was not offered in Nanjing University of the Arts or in major universities across the country, because there were no textbooks at all. With the support of his mentors Liu Ruli and Zhang Daoyi, Zhang Shaoxia began to sort out the complete history of European arts and crafts and published it in installments in the Journal of Nanjing University of the Arts, attracting a large number of professional readers in the field of art history and theory. Later, some interesting stories also happened during the publication process. Eventually, the three works, namely "A Brief History of European Arts and Crafts", "A History of Asian Arts and Crafts" and "A History of African and American Arts and Crafts", were published by Shaanxi People's Fine Arts Publishing House. These three books were both a challenge for Zhang Shaoxia and elevated his academic contributions to a higher level. Teacher Zhang Daoyi wrote a postscript for the book and highly praised "A Brief History of European Arts and Crafts" as "the first cornerstone in this field, which indicates that on the land of our China, systematic research on the foreign history in the field of arts and crafts has already begun." It can be seen that the academic status of this book is extremely important. In 2009, Zhang Shaoxia revised it again and equipped it with more refined pictures. Finally, the book "A History of World Arts and Crafts" was published by Shanghai Calligraphy & Painting Publishing House and received more extensive praise.
