Zhang Shaoxia recalled the process of compiling the three works "History of European Art", "History of the Development of Western Art", and "History of the Development of European Art" during his time at Nanjing University of the Arts. In 1978, Zhang Shaoxia entered Nanjing University of the Arts as a graduate student and became a disciple of Liu Ruli, a renowned historian of foreign art. Under the guidance of Mr. Liu, Zhang Shaoxia planned to conduct a systematic review of the history of Western art. Over a period of three years, Zhang Shaoxia created thirty to forty thousand cards of materials, which were then transformed into a manuscript of around two million words. Eventually, he compiled "History of European Art" in six volumes, totaling eight to nine hundred thousand words, which became the standardized textbook of foreign art history in many institutions at that time. At the suggestion of Mr. Liu, in order to enable this book to play a greater role in China's art education, Zhang Shaoxia decided to publish "History of the Development of Western Art" with the People's Fine Arts Publishing House in Beijing. After five years, this monumental work co-authored by Mr. Liu and Zhang Shaoxia was published in 1990. In 2001, the Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Publishing House discussed with Zhang Shaoxia about revising this book again. Another ten years passed, during which continuous improvements were made, meticulous layout design was carried out, and repeated proofreading was done. Finally, in 2011, the million-word art history masterpiece "History of the Development of European Art" was published. These three masterpieces are not only an indispensable part of Zhang Shaoxia's academic career but also a significant contribution to China's art education, laying the foundation for subsequent art education work.
